When you move to a new town there are always a million things to find. In a tourist town like Pattaya there are stores and restaurants that cater to all kinds of tastes and desires. Where do you buy groceries, household goods, or school supplies. If you are a foreign national you need to know where the nearest immigration office is, and the best way to get to and from the airport, and of course you will need to know what good restaurants are nearby your new condo in Skylight.
Food Mart is located on the corner Thappraya Road and Thepprasit Road, which is also basically the border between Jomtien Beach and Pattaya Beach. The Food Mart is a gourmet grocery store catering to a host of western tastes. You will find things like a gourmet bakery, full service meat counter with chicken, pork, lamb, and beef. There will be fresh coffee available, and a good selection of wines, as well as fine chocolates.
Other ethnic foods to hunt for are tortillas, an array of pastas, jarred spices, as well as any number of canned and jarred goods. Many types of beans, olives, cheeses, and crackers are all available. During the holidays most ingredients will be found at Food Mart for making traditional holiday feasts. There are also quite a few different sauces available for cuisines such as Russian, Mandarin, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, and many more.
The closest beaches to SKylight Jomtien are Dongtang and Jomtien Beaches. The two border each other near Jomtien Soi 1. Dongtang begins where Jomtien Beach ends and is protected from traffic with a shady foot path that meanders through the gardens of a large resort nearby. This section of the beach is fabulous for walking, and getting out of the sun as there are trees all along this area as well as lovely places to sit for a picnic.
Arguably the best Italian restaurant in Jomtien Beach is Gian’s. You can taste the love in every dish. Thailand is lacking in the fine dining category. Bangkok has offered disappointment after disappointment and to find such a lovely Italian restaurant that makes everything from scratch and orders special ingredients imported from Italy. The walls are lined with bottles of wine, the atmosphere will impress even the most discerning guests and they will not break the bank. Always look for the chef’s special and if he is making the lobster stuffed raviolis that night, get them, you will not regret it.
For high end shopping Pratumnak Hill, or the Beverly Hills of Thailand is literally just up the road. Enjoy fine jewelry stores, designer apparel, and beautiful accessories. There are many different Soi’s along Pratumnak Hill and each one has it’s own distinct personality. There will be different treasures in different places. Tell us about your favorite shops in the comments below!
Around about the time Skylight Condominium will finish construction is close to the time the sustainable tourist project should be finishing up on Big Buddha Hill. There is already a temple on the hill with the largest golden Buddha in all of Chon Buri, and currently under construction is an eco tourist destination unfolding. New flora and fauna is being introduced as well as new species of butterflies, and walking paths are being installed that are wheelchair accessible and picnic areas so everyone can enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Travel up Theppasit Road after dark and the market is on the south side of the road. It is huge, spanning 2 full city blocks. There are hundreds of food stalls, clothing vendors, and every object you can possibly imagine existing and never needing. Laser pointers, and toy guns, and knives, and ashtrays, candles, hand made crafts, purses, shoes, and just more and more and more. This is where you buy gifts for other people or stock up on key chains, or check out any little object that catches your fancy. People watching is also pretty incredible at this market as it gets mobbed, especially on the weekends.
Yes, the Chonburi Immigration office is located on Jomtien Soi 5, right next door to Powerhouse Development Co. Ltd. Renew you visa, get your residence certificate, report for your 90 day check in all just minutes from your new condo. Isn’t that convenient!?
In contrast to the Thepprasit Market the Night Market at Jomtien Beach is a lot more about having fun at sunset than it is shopping. There are plenty of items for sale, music CDs, leather goods, and an array of Thai foods, and Russian Cuisine. Many of the Thais speak Russian at this market as it has catered to them heavily for the last decade, however you will more likely see Chinese and Korean tourists there now, and also quite a few locals and expats. It is a popular place to sit and have a cocktail on the cheap and watch the sunset.
For delicious pizza dine in or carry out, and amazing sandwiches and American styles breakfasts look no further than Pastrami on Rye. With humble beginnings offering delivery only out of the back of their house, to the first small location, that had delivery and take away and a few seats, to there now full sit down restaurant just up the road from Skylight. Pastrami on Rye offers Biscuits & Gravy, an array of pizzas made with hand made dough (only drawback is the canned mushrooms, sauce from scratch and then shrooms from a can sacrilege) and a number of sandwiches such as the Ruben (my favorite) and an authentic Philly Cheese Steak. We shall ignore there one and only fault (canned mushrooms) and recommend them for anything else on the extensive menu.
In the Foodmart parking lot is another handy little feature. The direct bus to the Don Mueang International Airport. For 125 THB you get a comfortable air conditioned bus that drives direct to the airport every half hour. Hand down the easiest and cheapest way to get from Pattaya to the Airport in Bangkok!
At the far end of the scale, a ten minute drive with no traffic is the Outlet Mall. Find deep discounts on the best brand names from around the world. Such as Guess, Crocs, Levi’s, Coach, Playboy, Adidas, and many more. Find sales on items up to 70% off at the outlet mall in Pattaya.
